Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It is characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are inconsistent with the individual’s age and developmental level.
Core Features of ADHD
ADHD symptoms are categorized into three main groups:
Inattention: Difficulty paying attention to details, problems sustaining attention, trouble following instructions, organizational difficulties, forgetfulness, and being easily distracted.
Hyperactivity: Inability to stay still, constant movement, running or climbing in inappropriate situations, excessive talking, and difficulty engaging in quiet activities.
Impulsivity: Difficulty waiting for one’s turn, interrupting others, answering questions before they are fully asked, and acting without considering consequences.
Subtypes of ADHD
ADHD is classified into three subtypes:
Predominantly Inattentive Type
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
Combined Type (both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms)
