Auto Train Brain: EEG Cognitive Training for Reading Practice

Auto Train Brain is a mobile app used together with a commercially available EEG headband. This article describes what the app actually does during a reading-practice session, what it records, and what it is not. It makes no claim about outcomes.

What the set-up consists of

There are two parts. The first is a headband that records EEG — the small electrical signals measurable at the surface of the scalp. The second is the app, installed on a phone or tablet, which receives that recording over a wireless connection and runs the on-screen exercise. Nothing is administered and nothing is stimulated; the headband only records.

What a session looks like

The person puts on the headband, opens the app, and works through an exercise that involves reading or listening to material on screen. While they do that, the app turns a feature of the EEG recording into feedback they can see or hear, so the exercise responds to the measurement in real time. Sessions are kept short, and the app stores what it measured so that sessions can be compared with each other over time.

Consistency matters more than length, which is an ordinary observation about any kind of practice rather than a finding specific to EEG.

How the app selects an exercise

Auto Train Brain contains several named exercise sets that differ in which part of the recording they respond to and in how the on-screen task is arranged. The app chooses among them using the measurements it has and adjusts difficulty accordingly. That selection is the whole of what is meant by personalisation here. It is not an assessment, it is not a diagnosis, and it does not replace anything a qualified professional would do.

What the app does not do

Auto Train Brain is a wellness tool. It does not treat any condition, it does not replace reading instruction, tutoring, speech and language work, or any support arranged through a school or a professional, and it does not produce a measurement that can be read as a result in daily life. A change in a recording is a change in a recording.

Published research on EEG-based practice reports findings at the level of groups under controlled conditions, and those findings vary with protocol, duration, age and how change was measured. Group findings do not predict what any individual will experience.

Before you start

Ask what is measured and what is stored, where the data is kept and how it can be deleted. Read the subscription terms, the refund window and the cancellation procedure before you subscribe rather than afterwards; both are set out in the subscription agreement and the frequently asked questions. Treat any statement that promises a specific result, or a result within a specific number of sessions, as a reason for caution.
